Grand Chief Matthew Coon Come said, at the launch of construction of the $28.8 million fiubre-optic network in Chibougamau, the Crees had taken steps to make sure that Eeyou Istchee was not lacking when it comes to Internet technology.

"Over the past 10 years, the Crees have invested substantially in broadband technology," he said. "We coordinated a strategy to work with our neighbours to advance broadband in the region." (more)

Nation Talk: Construction to Begin of $28.8 million Fibre-Optic Network

Chibougamau. April 12, 2010: All fifteen northern communities in the James Bay region of Quebec have joined together to build a $28.8 million fibre-optic infrastructure project. Construction of the over-1,400 Km line began this spring and will be completed in 2011.

Funding for the project is tri-partite with $9.6 million contributions from local and regional governments and agencies and both the Quebec and Canada governments. This network will serve an area with 30,000 people in all the James Bay Cree communities and Chibougamau, Chapais, Matagami, Lebel-sur-Quevillon and Radisson. Some 800 Km of fibre optic lines are within the Hydro-Quebec structures.

Eeyou Communications Network (ECN) will support delivery telehealth, distance education, Internet and new generation mobility services as well as video and commercial traffic. (more)

19-04-10 Wouldn’t it be great to download your email attachments or those comedy skits from YouTube within seconds, instead of sitting in front of the computer screen for five minutes with your fingers crossed. Well, once a new broadband fibre-optic network is set up in the north, this will become a reality.

On April 12, the representatives from the governments of Canada and Quebec and 15 communities of the James Bay region met in Chibougamau and unified their effort to build a broadband fibre-optic network. The cost will be $28.8 million, with $9.6 million coming from Quebec, $9.6 million from Canada and $9.6 million from public organizations.

The Eeyou Communication Network (ECN), a non-profit telecommunication corporation, was proud to officially announce that this new network will be in service by 2011.(more)

Direction Informatique: La réseautique à large bande pour les Cris et les Jamésiens

18-04-10 D'ici quelques années, une quinzaine de villages de la Baie-James bénéficieront d'un réseau de télécommunications à haute vitesse en fibre optique. Cet ambitieux projet de 26 M$ procurera l'accès à Internet, la télémédecine, l'éducation à distance et d'autres services technologiques aux communautés cries et jamésiennes.

Le 12 avril dernier, le gouvernement du Québec, par le biais du programme Villages branchés, et le gouvernement du Canada, par l'entremise de l'organisme Développement économique Canada, ont annoncé qu'ils contribueraient 9,6 M$ chacun à l'établissement d'un réseau de télécommunications à large bande qui sera fondé sur la fibre optique dans le Nord-du-Québec.(more)

La Vie Rurale: Implantation d’un réseau de télécommunications à large bande passante à la Baie-James Nord-du-Québec

14-04-10 Pierre Corbeil, ministre responsable des Affaires autochtones, a annoncé une aide de 9,6 millions de dollars afin de soutenir l’implantation d’un réseau de télécommunications à large bande passante sur le territoire de la Baie-James dans le Nord-du-Québec.

Ce réseau fibre optique et de liens micro-ondes va, lorsqu’ installé, relier 134 bâtiments publics, scolaires et municipaux dispersés sur ce très grand territoire. C’est le réseau de communication Eeyou, un organisme sans but lucratif créé par des partenaires du territoire de la Baie-James, qui va assurer le déploiement et la gestion du réseau.

Chibougamau, Quebec, April 12, 2010 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced that Eeyou Communications Network has received $9,600,692 in non-repayable funding from the Government of Canada to set up a fibre-optic telecommunications network in the James Bay area. With this project, which will necessitate an overall investment of $28,831,392, the region’s communities will benefit from a reliable high-speed connection that will open up access to voice, data and video services.
